Multi-Level Patio With Dining & Living Room – Northbrook, IL

This outdoor living space was thoughtfully designed and built for a young, growing family. The property presented a few unique challenges, including a swale running through the center of the backyard and a sloping grade. With smart planning and creative design, we turned these obstacles into opportunities.

To manage drainage, we routed water beneath the lower patio, incorporating dry riverbeds and rock gardens on either side. Not only do these features serve a functional purpose, but they also add visual interest and texture to the landscape.

The layout features multi-level patios that separate the cooking and dining area from the relaxation zone. Each space is defined with thoughtful details, including LED lighting, a cedar pergola, a custom natural stone fireplace, and a mounted TV—creating a welcoming, all-seasons retreat.

We used Unilock Beacon Hill Smooth pavers in the ‘Fossil’ color and a custom blend of natural stone veneer for the grill island and fireplace. The grill station includes a gas grill, smoker, pull-out trash, and refrigerator for ultimate convenience.

Phase II of the project will begin this fall, adding a new walkway and front yard plantings to complete the transformation.
