Clearing A Blocked View
Overgrown evergreens at the foundation as well as a tall hemlock were blocking the new entry and custom blend stone work on the chimney. The client was content with keeping the existing concrete walk leading to the front door but needed a walk leading from the front door around the side of the house, into the backyard and to the detached garage at the alley. We were able to transplant the hemlock to the back lot line, creating privacy from the back alley site lines into their yard.
Before: Front Door Overgrowth
In this photo, you can see that the overgrown evergreen was blocking some features of the house. The custom stone chimney is hidden from view.
After: A Clear View
We moved the trees to the back to uncover the new chimney and incorporated gray boulders to tie the chimney and new color of the house into the landscape. Next, we cut new bed lines to extend the entryway plantings, giving more visual weight to the thin walk. Lastly, we planted a variety of shrubs and colorful perennials with various bloom times to complement the home’s architecture.
Before: Backyard With Old Deck
For additional privacy, the client requested a smaller deck and a patio space that would include a fire pit, seating area, and a space for a table and chairs. We added another set of stairs on the east side of the new deck to provide mudroom access.
After – New Deck, Pergola, & Patio with Fire Pit
Fire pits are a great addition to your backyard seating area. In the Chicago area, they help extend the length of the spring and fall season that you can spend outside. Who doesn’t love curling up by a fire?
